Pinterest Projects

It just so happens that I was introduced to Pinterest as I chose my new career of being a stay at home momma. I AM OBSESSED. Lucky for my husband, Pinterest projects are overtaking our house room by room. Don't worry I will be posting the successes and the failures - ummm it doesn't always come out like the cute pictures you pin.

Alphabet for Kinley's Playroom

I loved the idea of the alpahabet in the nursery as cliche as it is. However, I didn't want it in her nursery, I wanted it in her playroom. We used to have a huge game room that is a very awkward shaped space - now that we have a daughter it is a "play room" (sorry hubby no pool table for you :(

I was determined to do this on pinterest and finally took the time to do it. I wanted an alphabet over a chalkboard wall. Thanks to my husband and an exacto knife - this actually turned out really well!

FYI: I bought the letters at Hobby Lobby (they are 2.47 each but as you know everything at Hobby Lobby goes on sale eventually - so I got them for 30% off). I also got the scrapbook paper there for 50% off a sheet. Even better, you can actually fit 2 of those letters per sheet if you would like :)

Before I glued the scrapbook paper to the letter - I painted the sides of the letters black. Unless you want to be very over zealous and wrap the the letter with paper (ummm have fun?) then I would paint the sides.

Next, glue the full scrapbook paper to the letter. Do not trace and cut out the letter first to glue it (tried it and it was a nightmare!) It is much easier if you glue it and let it sit over night.

Wish I took pics, but next ask your husband or anyone handy with an exacto knife to spend some time with you and then force them to cut around each letter very carefully! My trick is fresh baked cookies and the golf channel (by the way when I say fresh baked I mean the ones that are precut that you throw on the pan).
Finished product :) The best part about painting the sides black is - when a little piece tears because you got a little cocky with the exacto knife . . .  touch it up with sharpie :)
This was our wall we wanted to use. We painted the entire playroom gray (my husband would be laughing right now if he read the "we" I DON'T PAINT. My very crafty husband made a chair rail to seperate the chalkboard and wall. The bottom is just chalkboard paint that you can buy at Sherwin Williams. Yes, we have an outlet plug in the center of our chalkboard  . . . Our homebuilder really thought that one through - didn't they know eventually I was going to make that a chalkboard wall?!

Best part about it . . . the letters stick up with sticky tack. So, no holes in the wall.
Finished product!

Rag Wreath for Mother's Day

I wanted to make something special and different for my mother and mother-in-law for Mother's Day. I saw this on Pinterest (of course) and thought I could easily do this for both of them and make it to what they would like. My mother went to UK and is OBSESSED (C-A-T-S Cats Cats Cats > she would yell that if she read this) So, I made her a UK one for my parents houseboat. My mother-in-law is a Breast Cancer survivor and is very involved with charities and groups that support the cause. So, I made her a Breast Cancer wreath for Breast Cancer awareness month.

Materials: A yard and a half of 3 different fabrics, a center piece, and an 18inch wire wreath frame.

There really are no steps are strategies to this except a whole lot of knotting. I am serious movie quoter so I must say "my fingers hurt . . . . yea well now your backs about to hurt." Those of you who have seen Happy Gilmore will understand :) If not . . . well just keep reading.

Kinley's Hospital Shadowbox

I saw this online and loved the idea * click here to see *. I didn't do a traditional baby book - I made one on Shutterfly that I love. I had nowhere to put her hospital bands, hat, cute name card etc. So, I made this and put it in her nursery :)
Terrible picture I know . . . I will update it eventually

 The Little Tikes Kitchen Makeover

I may have taken on a bit more than I can chew with this one. As you know I hate painting but when a good deal comes along - I just can't help myself. As you have seen on Pinterest - the amazing "Extreme Home Makeover: Little Tikes edition" * click here to see what I am talking about * I purchased a Little Tikes Country Kitchen (retails for almost 200) for $30 on our neighborhood facebook resale group. After a lot of patience and paint fumes.  . . I finally finished. I have to admit it wasn't as bad as I thought. The hardest part is getting it taken apart.
BEFORE
Paint colors: Make sure to buy the plastic paint. The Valspar was definitely easier to use than the Rust-Oleum. However, I think the Rust-Oleum will last longer and not chip off.

FINISHED PRODUCT
I really wanted to paint the phone but can't get it apart and can't paint over the foam numbers. I may figure out a way . . .  but for right now it is just going to be a pop of color :)

4.99 Pillow - Don't mind if I do . . .

So I had this old ugly pillow from my classroom that I was going to throw away, then I remember seeing something on Etsy I wanted and decided to make it myself :) I bought a pillow cover at Hobby Lobby for 4.99 and some fabric markers and got to work. Yes, I used fabric markers I CAN NOT SEW.

I had this wooden R that I traced with pencil - I DEFINITELY would use pencil first in case you mess up. Don't forget to put cardboard in between so the maker won't bleed through.

I actually already had these, I got them at Michael's. They ran out halfway through so I just got a good ol' sharpie from the drawer.
Finished product :) You can totally not tell it's sharpie at all. I would recommend not putting your head on it though . . . you can definitely smell the sharpie!

    1. Hey Stephanie! The paint did really well for awhile. The more and more my daughter used it it started to chip off. If I had to do it again - I probably wouldn't. Honestly, I got such a good deal on the kitchen and wanted to try something new. If you figure out a great way to make it last, let me know :) Good luck!
